The key differences between the Gulfstream G650 and the Gulfstream G650ER

Is the difference software or physical structural changes?
The key differences between the Gulfstream G650 and the Gulfstream G650ER primarily revolve around their range capabilities, which are achieved through a software modification rather than physical structural changes.
Here are the key distinctions:
Extended Range (ER) Capability: The Gulfstream G650ER is specifically the Extended Range (ER) Version of the Gulfstream G650.
Fuel Capacity:
◦ Gulfstream G650: Standard fuel capacity of 44,200 lb / 6,597 gal (20,049 kg / 24,972 ltr).
◦ Gulfstream G650ER: Increased fuel capacity of 48,200 lb / 7,194 gal (21,864 kg / 27,232 ltr).
◦ Despite the difference in capacity, both models physically have the same fuel tanks. The G650ER's ability to carry more fuel is due to a software modification that allows the aircraft to take on more fuel.
Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW):
◦ Gulfstream G650: 99,600 lb / 45,179 kg.
◦ Gulfstream G650ER: 103,600 lb / 46,993 kg. This represents a Gross Weight Increase that is 4,000 lbs / 1,814 kg greater than the G650.
Range:
◦ Gulfstream G650: 6,959 nm / 12,760 km.
◦ Gulfstream G650ER: 7,507 nm / 13,773 km.
◦ When flying with full seats, the difference is also notable: G650 has a range of 5,912 nm / 10,949 km, while the G650ER has a range of 6,459 nm / 11,962 km.
Takeoff and Landing Performance:
◦ Takeoff Performance SL ISA BFL: G650 is 5,858 ft / 1,736 m, while G650ER is 6,299 ft / 1,920 m.
◦ Landing Performance FAA Field Length: G650 is 2,680 ft / 817 m, while G650ER is 2,445 ft / 745 m.
Conversion and Cost:
◦ A Gulfstream G650 can be converted into a G650ER through the ASC 014 – GVI Extended Range (G650ER) Modification.
◦ This conversion involves software changes and can only be performed by Gulfstream.
◦ The overall cost for this conversion is approximately $2,000,000 USD. (at June 2025)
• Certification Status: Despite the enhanced capabilities, the G650ER is not considered a new aircraft model and holds the same certification as a G650.
It is essential to note that several other specifications, including fuselage dimensions, cabin dimensions, typical crew and passenger configurations, pressurization, normal cruise speed, climb rate, ceiling, and engine type (Rolls-Royce BR 725 A1-12 with "On Condition" TBO), remain unchanged between the G650 and G650ER. Both models also feature the Gulfstream PlaneView II (Honeywell Primus Epic II) Avionics Suite, which includes a Head-Up Display (HUD), Synthetic Vision System (SVS), and Enhanced Vision System (EVS).
